You head to the Spa to take a spinning class or maybe you work out with a trainer or do laps. After your workout and your stretches you go to the locker room for a steam or a soak and a rinse-off under the outdoor shower. You slip into your light robe and sit by the waterfalls sipping iced tea, waiting for your massage. Your masseuse finds you and escorts you into one of the new massage hales. You melt away as you receive your treatment. So far your day has been seamless.
Who makes this possible? You may never have met this person or known who she is, but she is the one who is responsible for your experience at the Spa. She isn’t at the front counter; her office is hidden in the back. Her name is Megan King and she is the Spa Operations Manager.
Megan has been with us for 14 months now. Eldest of 5 children, Megan was raised in New Britain, Connecticut, a small town near Hartford. After attending a Catholic elementary school and Loomis Chaffee private school she headed to Tulane University. She majored in Anthropology and English and was lucky enough to spend her junior year studying in Ireland.
Right after college Megan started work in the hospitality industry. She worked for ten-and-a-half years at New Hampshire’s The Inns and Spa at Mill Falls. She started at the front desk, moved to sales manager, Operations Manager, and then opened their newest Inn, Conference Center and Spa. She was definitely hooked.
Megan decided to expand her work and personal experience by moving to Tucson and working for Miraval Resort. As Front Office Manager she handled guest services, IT issues and trained the staff to counsel guests as to what treatments and services they could use.
After two years Megan was offered the chance to work at Hualalai and she snapped at it. She missed being near water and she had always dreamed of working in Hawaii. For her, it was another adventure, another way of expanding her experiences, both professional and private.
Megan is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the spa, being in charge of staff, facilities, and promotions. You name it—she is involved. She is the go-to-person at the Spa; which is just fine with her. That’s what she loves the most: the people. She loves dealing with a variety of staff, from the spa concierges to the massage therapists to the members and hotel guests that have various needs. She loves the diversity. As a manager she likes to be proactive rather than spend all her time putting out fires, though she has no problem tackling fires when they break out.
When she’s not at Hualalai, she enjoys the outdoors, walking her dog, days on the beach, hiking, camping, and cooking. And she does like driving her motorcycle. In fact Megan is a Harley-Davidson trained instructor.
Megan wants members to know that she would love to get to know them better. She often attends the Mooch with her partner, Nick Szubiak (Head of our concierge department). She won’t interrupt your conversation but she would be delighted to meet you and get to know you.
