This article appeared in Fortune Life on August 10th and was written by Erin Carlyle. We don’t usually announce when homes change ownership, however when it reaches the main stream media we will put it on the blog. It’s also a chance to welcome Howard and his family to Hualalai. We hope that we will still see Bill and Lek around the property.
Starbucks’ billionaire CEO Howard Schultz has closed on a $25 million, eight-bedroom home in the exclusive Four Seasons development in Hawaii’s Hualalai resort area.
The 1.8-acre property hit the MLS in late January with a price tag of $33 million. The seller was William Jahnke, the former head of Well [sic] Fargo Investment Advisors. Harold Clarke, with the high-end brokerage Luxury Big Island, represented both the buyer and the seller but declined to reveal details. However, other sources confirmed the deal.
Schultz’s new home contains 10,641 square feet of living space. Hualalai boasts two golf courses and multiple sports and beach clubs and swimming facilities. Its neighbor just to the south is Kukio, Hawaii’s most exclusive community, where Michael Dell‘s 18,500-square-foot Raptor Residence lies on that development’s prime lot.
“Basically this is the best option on Hualalai for a house right now,” Clarke said of the home, which was the largest property for sale in the resort. “This is as good as it gets.”
Schultz’s new home sits on the edge of the resort’s golf course and is set back from the Pacific Ocean, with views of mountains, lava rock, and coconut trees. It features nine bathrooms, a game room and a media room, a Jacuzzi and an infinity-edged pool. The residence actually stretches over two lots, with a main home on one and a series of four individual pods on the other. The home’s walls are covered in teak.
The property debuted as a pocket, off-the-MLS listing late last year before hitting the multiple listings service earlier this year.
Schultz became a billionaire via his stake in Starbucks. Friends including David Geffen have urged him to run for president on the Democratic ticket, but Schultz has said he is not interested for now.Time magazine put him on the cover in February. He could not be immediately reached regarding this deal.

Every now and then we post events that occur off the Big Island that involve a number of members. Wally and Pat O’Dell decided to plan their joint decadal birthdays and squeeze in their decadal anniversary by taking over Downton Abbey (Highclere Castle.) A number of Hualalai members flew to England to celebrate with them. This is not unusual. One of the most pleasant benefits of being a member at Hualalai are the friendship you make and how often members join and travel with fellow members around the world celebrating events and sharing experiences.

Savannah Harriman-Pote, High School Senior, Parker School
The Hualalai Ohana Foundation host many programs, but one of the most popular is the Prek-12th grade Scholarship Awards. This year 72 awards have been granted. The awards range from $500.00 – $3,500.00. Students can also receive an Academic Bonus of $500.00 with a GPA of 3.5.
As part of the application process for the Prek-12th grade scholarships, the parent or guardian must submit a personal letter outlining the student’s educational goals, accomplishments and special needs.
Katherine Harriman has worked at The Four Seasons Hualalai as a concierge for more than 10 years. For eleven school years, the Hualalai Ohana Foundation has assisted her Ohana with a scholarship award for her daughter Savannah to attend Parker School. Yes, eleven school years! Below is an excerpt from Katherine’s application letter that showcases the benefit of those eleven years of educational support:
Over the years you have born witness to Savannah’s accomplishments in her academics and extracurricular activities and this year was a big one. She spent a month this past summer in the Public Defender’s office interning in and out of the courtroom.
Savannah also continued in her theatre, participating in the Kahilu’s Keiki Performing Arts Workshop. Plus is a regular at bake sales, car washes, and all the philanthropic events that school offers to raise funds for our neighborhood.
In her course work Savannah set herself a goal to complete three AP classes and to excel, which you can see from her report card that her new GPA is 4.38. She enjoyed a second year as Class President and I have just been informed the she is running for Student Body President in fall of 2015.
Her work in debate earned her 4th in the State and Parker School tied for the State Championship, guided with her leadership as Team Captain in her division. (GO BULLS!)
She is just a super awesome person and her involvement in her community at Parker School and Waimea has been a direct outcome of having the opportunity to be a student. It has been the Hualalai Ohana Foundation that has paved the way and Savannah is running toward her greatness every day.
In the fall of 2015, Savannah Harriman-Pote will be sprinting into her senior year of high school likely as elected Student Body President of Parker School with college applications pending for Bowdoin College, Bennington College and Mount Holyoke on her horizon. It seems clear she is already an excellent example of the greatness and the possible academic accomplishment of our Hualalai Keiki. The Hualalai Ohana Foundation is proud to support her on that road to greatness and we cannot wait to see where she goes from here.
It’s official; tickets are now available for the Hualalai Ohana Foundation’s 11th Annual Golf, Dinner and Auction Event, The Red Carpet-A Hollywood Affair.
When you walk the Red Carpet into the Four Seasons Grand Ballroom you will know this year’s event is special! The silent and live auctions will offer local and handcrafted items, plus a few extravagant experiences not to be missed.
Then Big Swing and The Ballroom Blasters will bring a blast from the past and the best party music of today directly to Hualalai. Big Swing and the Ballroom Blasters combine Swing, Jazz, Soul and Pop into a powerful and energetic, non-stop, dance all night performance.
Tickets for the Golf Tournament and Dinner event can be purchased at www.HualalaiOhanaFoundation.org or you may call the Hualalai Ohana Foundation Office at 808.325.4701 to purchase by phone or for more information.
This past Wednesday, July 8th, the Ke ‘Olu Farmer’s Market opened for the first time. Unfortunately there was mix up about this grand opening and the word did not get out to the membership. But we wanted to share that the experience was delightful and what to expect in the future.
First off, there was free coffee and then there was astries, malasadas, even gluten free pizza dough and Pizza Sauce. Veges galore were available from Betsy Sanderson and Paul Johnston of Kekela Farms up in Kamuela (Waimea). The market will be opened from 8AM to 10 AM every Wednesday at Ke ‘Olu on the lawn above the pool.
So next week pick up one of the whicker baskets, make your selections and then check out by using cash, credit card or put it on your account. Enjoy every Wednesday.

The Hualalai ‘Ohana Foundation, was established in 2002 as a nonprofit vehicle for Hualalai Residents to contribute to the well-being of the community’s most valuable asset: its employees.
The Foundation’s tradition of giving is two-fold: to offset the high costs of both education and medical care for Hualalai employees and their immediate families.
Since its inception in 2002, the Hualalai Ohana Foundation has provided over $3,650,000 in medical awards, scholarships and educational programs.
Of that, the Education Committee has awarded $2,929,065 to scholarship and educational programs. In 2014, the Foundation reached its largest number of employee families ever with:
70 children in the Prekindergarten to 12th grade private school scholarship program
31 students in the Higher Education scholarship program
12 employees or their spouses in continuing education classes in the coursework program
29 employees children in the coursework and tutoring programs for continuing education programs as well as private tutoring
131 employees children between the ages of birth to 5 years old received a free book delivered to their home monthly, through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library
86 students received an Honor Roll Award

960 students participate in the Lifeplan Mentoring program at Kealakehe High School (through Spring 2015 – and includes 60 youth leaders)
36 Adults volunteered as Mentors – 16 are Resort employees
As 2015 is well underway, the Foundation is set to exceed these participation numbers in the Education programs by the end of the year!
The Hualalai Ohana Foundation is committed to achieving 100% participation by homeowners to invest in our community by providing encouragement and financial assistance to the Hualalai employee families and through them, the people of Hawaii Island.
