True winter is here for the first time in several years. Hualalai is a vortex of beauty for the “chilly” weather. Thanks to Bob Holman for the Mauna Kea view from Hualalai golf course. Thanks to David Taran for the sunset photo taken between the tropical downpours. Thanks to Pam Krug for the photo of the egret in her pond. Thanks to Eva Shulman for the hunting heron photo on Waiakauhi Pond.

Three Ring Ranch: Exotic Animal Sanctuary!

January 8 Talk by Dr. Hart Was For The Birds!

Sally Reeve shared this:

On January 8, Dr. Patrick Hart gave members a look at the audial behavioral and community ecology and conservation of Hawaiian forests and birds.  Much of his research was conducted at the Hakalau Wildlife Refuge on the eastern slopes of Mauna Kea. He is the founder of the Hart Lab at UH Hilo. He and his students have studied: Specific dialects within a bird species between kipukas (small areas with trees within a lava field), the genetic versus community learned bird songs, and the difference in the timing and frequency of bird songs.

Dr Hart’s podcast:

Hoping the resort can organize a trip to the Hakalau Wildlife Refuge. Until then if you want to visit the refuge, you need to go in with a guide.https://jackjeffreyphoto.com/tours/ , https://hawaii-forest.com/, https://www.fws.gov/refuge/hakalau-forest/visit-us

NERD Talk: at the Kuma Kai Marine Center

“Spring Into Marine Life” on February 24, Friday at 10:30 at the King’s Pond Kuma Kai Marine Center!

In honor of spring time and the surrounding holidays, Kelsey Makida will be looking into some fascinating marine species found worldwide that are spring-holiday themed.

Kelsey Makida is originally from Southern California, and moved to Hawai’i in 2007 to attend the University of Hawai’i at Hilo where she graduated with a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Marine Science. Her affinity to marine life was sparked by a visit to her favorite Aquarium at Monterey Bay and was further ignited by caring for her pet fish growing up. During her college career, Kelsey interned at the Pacific Aquaculture and Coastal Resources Center in Hilo, working with octopus, sturgeon and urchins. From this experience, she rechanneled her interest in Marine Science toward sustainable aquaculture and the importance such studies has had on Hawaiian history. Post-graduation she took a job at a commercial scale mariculture facility in Kona as a technician, cultivating marine organisms for food and training in husbandry. The knowledge and experience she gained at that facility helped her transition into her role at Hualalai as the Marine Husbandry Specialist in 2014. To further her knowledge and skills, Kelsey also received her certification in Veterinary Assisting in 2018.
