Kip Larson, who has worked at the Beach House as a waiter and bartender for many years, has lost his son, Chris, to an accident a week or so ago. Chris was in his early twenties; a great young man who was just beginning what promised to be a wonderful life. He was hit by a car while crossing the street one evening in Flagstaff, AZ. Some of us knew Chris through Kip’s great pride in him. Others of us were fortunate enough to know him ourselves when he used to work various odd jobs around the island, often with his dad. A small memorial service led by Uncle Earl was held on the beach by NELHA. For those who would like to contact Kip here is his address:
Kip Larson 75-5660 Kopiko st. Suite# 383 Kailua-Kona, HI 96750.

A 25-year-old paddleboarder was hospitalized in critical condition with multiple wounds after getting bitten by a shark Saturday morning near one of Hawaii’s exclusive, white-sand resort areas. The attack happened around 9:30 a.m. local time at the beach in Kukio, which is considered to be a crown jewel along Hawaii’s gorgeous Kona Coast. Fire officials said the unidentified man was stand-up paddleboarding about 100-150 yards offshore, KHON-TV reported. The victim was flown to North Hawaii Community Hospital with multiple injuries to a hand and a leg. A hospital spokeswoman said the man was undergoing surgery, the station reported. Kukio Resort offers a 10-hole Tom Fazio-designed golf course, a full service spa and clubhouse, a beautiful beach bar, watersports center and breathtaking Pacific Ocean views. The beach had no county lifeguards on duty, but a private safety team was present, KHON reported. “Apparently they had heard a scream from the ocean and they took a four-man canoe out to find a male individual who had been bumped off his paddle board about 100-150 yards offshore,” Fire Capt. Michael Grace told the station. “They recovered him from the ocean. He had injuries to his right side extremities.” People on the beach were reportedly able to apply multiple tourniquets to his right arm and leg before paramedics arrived. The beach in the area was closed after the attack, KHON reported. Details about the shark were not immediately available. Dan Dennison with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources said that, per standard procedure, beach closure signs warning visitors about the presence of sharks are displayed for a mile on either side of the attack for the rest of the day whenever such an incident occurs. A decision will be made Sunday morning on whether to reopen the beach, he said. Fox News reporter Christopher Carbone and the Associated Press contributed to this story. Thanks to Barbara Britt Meet Ku’uipo Valenzuela, the newest real estate Sales Executive with Hualalai Realty. I call her Ku’u because…it’s easier and she is okay with that! Ku’uipo joined us about two months ago after working for some time at the Mauna Lani Resort, selling the Kamilo development for Brookfield Residential. Prior to Kamilo she represented developers selling Wai’ula’ula at the Mauna Kea Resort, Luala’i in Waimea, and Hali’i Kai at the Waikoloa Beach Resort. Ku’u was raised on Oahu until she was thirteen years old, at which time her family moved to Waimea, where her father works for Parker Ranch. After High School, she attended the University of Hawaii at Hilo majoring in Business. In 2013 she married Erwin Valenzuela who is a lineman for HELCO. Ku’u has two young children, 3-year-old, Tayvin and 9-month old, Tayvia. Both attend daycare in Waimea. When asked how she handles caring for two kids and working full time, her answer is simple: “I don’t sleep.” She does, however, take time off for her hobby of free diving. She’s not the kind of free diver who holds their breath and keeps going deeper and deeper. Ku’u free dives for dinner in shallow waters. She loves spear-fishing with a 3-prong spear; her favorite fish to take home are Kole. Ku’u says she jumped at the chance to work at Hualalai because she always considered the resort to be the best in the world. She loves the fact that the staff and members consider themselves “Ohana” and that Hualalai maintains stewardship over the land. “Everyone has been so welcoming, not only the members, but all the staff too. The people is what makes this place so special” If you are in the Real Estate Office area feel free to stop in and meet Ku’u. She and Regina are great assets to the Real Estate Office.
Jingles, a semi wild cat who lived in a small lava cave off Lipoa Street was found deceased in his little home this past Monday. According to a few members Jingles was about 14 years old, confirmed by his last visit to a vet. Many members would leave food for Jingles and looked after him. Member, Chris Hattasch set up a small tribute at Jingles’ cave. Thanks to Chris Hattasch |
