HE LEI HALI’A ALOHA – LEI WORKSHOP

Join us this May for a lei making and a talk story event with Pono Kalipi. Born and raised on Maunaloa, Molokaʻi, Pono has been making lei since he was seven years old. He currently resides in Hilo and his lei ʻaʻaliʻi was selected for the iconic official Merrie Monarch shirt this past April.

“May brings the blossoming of flowers in Hawaiʻi and also serves as a powerful metaphor for our own journey as individuals. We are all like budding lei makers, embarking on our unique paths in life, each of us a pua—a flower—awaiting our moment to bloom. An Out of This World Report🌔

Monday morning at Hualalai started with a beautiful sunrise. Then it was time for the eclipse to begin. Although it was a bit cloudy and we were just a little bit in the path of the eclipse , I was happy I had my Eclipse Glasses so I could see this celestial marvel.

The hula at Merrie Monarch this year was so incredible that it was out of this world!

Ka‘onohikaumakaakeawe Kananiokeakua Holokai Lopes of Ka La ‘Onohi Mai O Ha‘eha‘e is Miss Aloha Hula 2024.

The 21-year-old from Oahu is studying for her master’s degree in communications from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She’s also the daughter of wife-and-husband kumu hula team Tracie and Keawe Lopes.

Spring Sightings At Hualalai!

Spring has sprung many kids from school so they could enjoy their Spring Break at Hualalai. It’s been fun seeing so many families enjoying their Hawaiian time together although it was kind of a shock seeing a two-year-old driving a cart down Waiulu Street. (just kidding…I think.) With overflow seating at the pools, people got creative in order to have a front row seat for the sunset.

And, of course, we’re always treated to the wonders of nature here: sunrise over Mauna Kea.

The Club at Hualalai, aided by the Easter Bunny, was busy all day and evening on Easter Sunday providing members with sumptuous meals. A little bit of rain couldn’t put too much of a damper on things and we were rewarded with a double rainbow lighting the sky.

Drum roll please, I am so happy to share with you all that after a much anticipated wait, our new nail polish brand, Côte has finally graced our shelves! This polish is free of all harmful chemicals, vegan and cruelty free. I am so pleased to share that it is also quick drying! Kumu Kai Center Event: March 29 at 10:30 AM

One of the most interesting places at Hualalai is the Kumu Kai Center located at King’s Pond.

On March 29, Kelsey Makida, the Marine Husbandry Specialist at Hualalai, will be speaking at 10:30 am. about marine species. What a way to welcome spring!

In honor of spring time and the surrounding holidays, we’ll be looking into some fascinating marine

species found worldwide that are spring-holiday themed.

Kelsey is originally from Southern California, and moved to Hawai’i in 2007 to attend the University of

Hawai’i at Hilo where she graduated with a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Marine Science. Her affinity to

marine life was sparked by a visit to her favorite Aquarium at Monterey Bay and was further ignited by

caring for her pet fish growing up. During her college career, Kelsey interned at the Pacific Aquaculture

and Coastal Resources Center in Hilo, working with octopus, sturgeon and urchins. From this experience,

she rechanneled her interest in Marine Science toward sustainable aquaculture and the importance such

studies has had on Hawaiian history. Post-graduation she took a job at a commercial scale mariculture

facility in Kona as a technician, cultivating marine organisms for food and training in husbandry. The

knowledge and experience she gained at that facility helped her transition into her role at Hualalai as the

Marine Husbandry Specialist in 2014. To further her knowledge and skills, Kelsey also received her

certification in Veterinary Assisting in 2018.

I had to pull my sweatshirt back out on Thursday night at 5:30 PM when the weather did a 180. Back to WINDY and COLD with mauka rain in Waimea. Fortunately, the sun still sets every night!

February at Hualalai: Packed with Events!

February is so packed with cultural, sports and educational events that it’s lucky we have 29 days this year. The Weekly Update will keep you informed of everything you need to know, including how to sign up for Hawaiian language classes.

The RESIDENT Beach House is a busy locale at this time of year. It hosted the Member Reception, as well as providing for daily whale and wave watching and a venue for the talented fire eater.
