A Note from Cecilia Hirko:
Have you ever returned back from dinner at the resort and have your golf cart missing? You’re pretty sure you remember where you parked it, right? Golf cart still not there? Double check. Triple check. Hmmm, wondering if perhaps that last glass of wine impaired your memory?
So we called Hualalai Security (we weren’t too concerned we just needed a ride back!) and they were there within minutes. Not an uncommon incident here, apparently. What wonderful service is this? The next morning they rang our bell and voila! Someone had returned our golf cart to the Reality parking lot. No questions need be asked.
We were especially glad our “Ikaika-Warrior, Helmut head” who protects us and keeps us safe, was still proudly hanging from our rear view mirror.

The skies were magical too.

Just as we were firing up the barbecue for a Valentine Family Dinner, a light rain started. We were sure it would be over soon. NO!! The rain became torrential and then steady. Our son braved the rain and barbecued the steaks!
Bill McDowell captured the sunset just as the light rain began to fall.

Notice from Hilo Medical Center Covid Team
Welcome news: “CVS to begin offering COVID-19 vaccines at 7 Longs Drugs in Hawaii starting Feb. 11,” according to today’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s story – includes Hilo! Today is day 10 of vaccinating kupuna 75 years and older! We are still being inundated with calls on our helpline (808.932.3000 press 8) and are trying our best to get to each and every call. We remain on track to administer upwards of 1,000 doses per week, dependent on supply. Please know because of exceedingly high demand for our kupuna 75 years plus seeking the vaccine, we have had to delay the start of vaccinating the next group of kupuna 65 years and older and other essential workers.
- Hilo Medical Center is focused on specializing in vaccinating our kupuna.
- We are currently vaccinating our kupuna 75 years and older.
- 65+ can complete the 1st step of the registration process on HiloMedicalCenter.org. Pre-registering on our site will hold your place in line to receive an email from the CDC to register for your shot.
- In order to ensure vaccines are available for you, we only open appointment slots as vaccines become available. Currently all vaccine supplies are being utilized by our 75+ population. Until we receive additional vaccines, we will not be vaccinating 65+ and other essential 1b groups until further notice.
- Vaccination appointments for 65+ and essential 1b workers will be made available as vaccines are received are more appointments can be made.
- Please refrain from calling the helpline if you are not 75 and older to allow access for our very senior and most vulnerable population.
- Our commitment is to give out the vaccines we receive – currently a 1,000 plus doses per week.
- Please continue to visit us at www.HiloMedicalCenter.org for the latest information about our vaccination clinic.
- We will update you when we have more vaccine availability and appointments available.

Beginning January 25th, Residents’ Beach House will be taking dinner reservations for internal guests only. In addition to our membership community, this includes hotel guests and renters for same day reservations made after 3pm.
Although members were not treated to the amazing Mitsubishi buffet lunches of CoVid yesteryear, we were presented with elegant bento box packages. They were grand, but crossing our fingers for a return of the buffets next year.
