Animal House

It’s a real zoo around our house. Just yesterday a gecko came in for a visit, a mongoose strolled through the shower garden, Francolins roosted by the lanai, and birds flew in and out. These egrets were on the alert for the next guests’ arrival.

A Note from Alan Dubroff

Aloha Hualalai Owners,

I am sending this email to inform you about an unfortunate incident within the resort yesterday. (Monday, April 5.)

There was a structure fire yesterday within Ke Alaula Villas.  The fire started in a detached garage and spread to a vehicle parked near the garage.  Fortunately, there were no injuries, and the Hualalai Volunteer Fire Brigade was able to quickly respond to the scene to contain the fire.  Three other fire departments (Kona, Waikoloa, and South Kohala) also responded to the blaze.

Our Volunteer Firemen (and women) did an amazing job helping to contain the fire to its point of origin and protect the nearby homes.  We are fortunate to have a staff of amazing and committed people working within the resort. In addition, we are fortunate that several years ago the Hualalai Board of Directors committed to buying a fire truck and supporting the ongoing operations of a volunteer fire Department within the resort.  The damage from this fire was minimize through our dedicated staff and the good decisions of our Board of Directors.  I’d like to give a special thanks to Directors Peggy Kent and Ray Lagger for being instrumental in the creation of our Fire Brigade – thank you!

Please take a moment to thank our Volunteer Fire Department staff and the Security Staff for their service. (Our security team helped the volunteer brigade made up of bonafided Ex fire fighters led by our own Ralph Yawata.)

You can email Ralph with a thank you message: ralph.yawata@fourseasons.

Rainbow’s End: Hualalai

It’s been a little over a year since the USA and Hualalai shut down because of the CoVid 19 virus. I remember feeling as if I were in some science fiction movie….I was never fond of science fiction movies; being in one was worse. Many people got quickly out of Dodge, while others of us stayed and Hunkered at Hualalai. All of us kept asking: How could this happen? What is going to happen next? When will it happen? The future seemed grim. It was all unbelievable.

We’ve gone through a lot in these last 12 months. We’ve learned a lot. Hualalai: the land, the ocean, the skies, the sunrises and sunsets, the rainbows, the mountains and the people have all kept us steady. March 30’s rainbow was a reflection of that.

Shark Sighting Facts

Because your editor heard conflicting accounts about the Shark Sighting Sign posting, she went to the source for information: Trent Fischer, director of OAC/Alaka’i Nalu.

“We had the sign up on Thursday, March 18 because there was a shark sighting. But it’s been safe since then,” Trent said.

Okay, then! That’s the scoop.

BTW, a big thank you to the whole Alaka’i Nalu staff who keeps us safe. We appreciate it!!

Shark Sighted Sign Was Not a Current Event!!!

Chantal Prunier wrote to clear up any misunderstandings about yesterday’s post with the award worthy photo from Bill McDowell.

“Alaka’i Nalu reports that the Shark Sighted sign hasn’t been on our beach for a while and no shark has been sighted lately!”

Glad to know and glad to clear that up!!
