COVID-19, 2020

We didn’t really know what was hitting us two years ago today. One day it was Spring Break at Hualalai and the next everything was shut down. No one could imagine that the resort would be closed for the next nine months. It was so eerie it began to feel as if we were in a SCI-FI movie that had no ending. Hualalai was a ghost town. Here’s to happier and healthier days!!

Maui’s Beaches Are Disappearing Fast!

Scientists forecast that Hawaii could lose 40% of its beaches to sea level rise by 2050. West Maui, where Kahana Bay is located, is ground zero. About 14% of shoreline in West Maui has been completely lost to erosion, according to Hawaii Sea Grant. That’s the highest percentage of beach loss anywhere in Hawaii.

Ty Emanuel has watched it happen with his own eyes.

When Emanuel bought his condo at the Royal Kahana complex 25 or 30 years ago, “there was a great big beach,” he said.

“You could step from the grassy lawn right onto the beach.”

Now, there are 8-to-10-foot drop-offs were it not for piles of sandbags that stabilize the bluff, he said.

Emanuel is a member of the Kahana Bay Steering Committee. He’s among those urging passage of a Community Facilities District so his condo and those of many others won’t be taken out by the next big storm. The condos are valued at more than half a billion dollars and generate about $10 million in tax revenue.

2022 Four Seasons Resort Hualālai Canoe Regatta!

The first annual Four Seasons Resort Hualālai Canoe Regatta took place yesterday, March 12.
With Hawaiian blessings leading their way, 100 OC-1 and OC-2 paddlers raced a 9-mile course starting directly in front of the Resort. The canoes, looking like swift dolphins,  glided gracefully across the waters.

Sea Turtle Research at Hualalai

Debby Webster shared the following description and photos:
“I believe they found nine turtles today. They measured each one, length and width, implanted a chip for identification, etched and then painted a number on the shell, and gave them an injection of antibiotics. The kids from HPA were terrific. They really knew what they were doing, snorkeling for turtles that weren’t on the beach, transporting them in large plastic bins, recording all of the pertinent information, holding them in place for their checkups and covering their heads with a towel to make them less nervous. I’m so glad we went by to watch and talk to David, members of the Natural Resources Team for Hualalai and the science teacher from HPA who was leading the effort.”

Stunning Sunsets Stir the Senses!

The sunsets are so incredible at Hualalai, people all over the property are taking photos as the sun dips into the ocean. The first three photos are from March 8. We get different perspectives from different places.

Hualalai Ohana Foundation Hike: Walking into History

Chantal Prunier recently led the “Walking the Trails of our Ahupua’a” first inaugural Hualalai Ohana Foundation hike. Chantal, a member of the HOF Events Committee,  explained the trail system used by Hawaiians for trade between the mauka (upland residents) and the makai (seaside residents.) “As we hiked, we talked about trails, community, patience, specialized skills, trading, transportation and so much more,” Chantal said. “We’ll run this hike again in the future for donors and volunteers of the Hualalai Ohana Foundation as a means to thank people for their involvement.”

“I never realized so much Hawaiian history was right here in the middle of the resort,” Kathy Ferguson, HOF Events Chair, said.
“The walk took slightly less than 2 hours  and is probably about a mile and half in length.  It’s not strenuous but there are patches with lots of loose rock and in one place lots of golf balls to maneuver around. I think most able-bodied people would be able to complete the walk.”

Beautiful Big Island’s Bounty!

From the ocean to the mountains, being on the Big Island of Hawaii brings many adventures for travelers and residents alike. In one day you can go from the ocean to the top of Mauna Kea, at 13, 803 feet, and then back down, after a stop at the Waipi’o Valley, to sip a Big Daddy at sunset.

Hualalai Discovery Programs: Aloha ‘Aina

Exciting News for Members: Learning about our island of Hawaii!

The Hualalai Club is thrilled to announce a new program focusing on educating and familiarizing participants with this exceptional island that we call home. The Hualālai Discovery Program’s objective is to foster more Aloha ‘Aina, or love of the land. These curated programs have been designed exclusively for our Members to connect even more deeply with our incredible home. Aloha ‘Aina teaches us that if you take care of the land, it will take care of you.

To that end, we have developed an experiential program designed in two parts to experience more of the Island of Hawai’i in new and unique ways. First through conversation then through experiences, we will explore more of this rich culture and bountiful land through the eyes of experts. There are many stories to be told, lessons to be learned, and wonders to behold right here on our Island, and the goal of this program is to bring them right to YOU, our Members, in a fun, immersive, and exclusive atmosphere.

This two-part series begins with a complimentary Talk Story and then a chance to go on an excursion. Starting March 4th, we invite you to join us for a Talk Story with a local subject expert every first Friday of the month who will share their expertise in working with the bounty of our land. Feel free to ask questions and have in-depth conversations with these Masters of their Craft.

On the last Friday of the month, there will be an opportunity to venture out beyond the gates of Hualalai on a related excursion. Immerse yourself in the world of the subject learned about at the beginning of the month and experience it in a unique setting, guided by the experts met earlier in the program.

Our first Talk Story:

March 4, 2022 | 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM | Ke’olu Great Room

New Hualālai Discovery Series!

Greenwell Farm’s Talk Story

Join us in the Ke’olu Great Room to Talk Story and meet the folks from Greenwell Farms and learn about their unique Kona Coffee Farm. You’ll learn about the history, economics and future of the Big Island’s coffee industry. We’ll finish off this tantalizing talk with a coffee tasting. Please join us!

Complimentary, Reservations are required 48 hours in advance

A Sunset Special!

I love that when the sun is setting, everyone stops for a few minutes to stare at the horizon. It is a special moment that inspires awe in all of us. (Okay, not the little kids. They’re still running around or digging in the sand or throwing rocks into the water. I also love that they do that. No matter how many devices they have going, they are still kids, doing what kids have always done.)

With the full moon rising, the ocean waves are simply astounding.
