One of the neat things about Kona Village are the various birds you will find around the property. Many of the birds have been there for years. Check out the Burdekin Ducks that float in the ponds. The Burdekin Duck is found in coastal tropical Australia from central Queensland to the Kimberlys in Western Australia, as well as in Hawaii, particularly throughout the mangrove flats and paperbark swamps. The species prefers brackish waters but will visit freshwater swamps and lagoons further inland during the wet season.
If you wander into the “back-of-the-house” area of Kona Village you will find a bunch of old cages that were used for housing the working parrots that greeted guests at the entry circle. The parrots are long gone, but every now and then you will find a mother duck and it’s babies in one of the cages. They are placed there for protection so the ducklings can grow strong and big.
