For 25 years Becky Holman was an artist at Kona Village. She and her husband Bob guested there and Becky used her talent to share the beauty of Kona Village and Hawaii in general. Kona Village management used her artwork in their publicity and advertising while many guests purchased her work to bring home to the mainland. At the same time Aloha Airlines gave her stationary cards to first class passengers. (Some of us still remember getting those cards back when first class was First Class.)
When they moved to Hualalai in 2000, Becky continued her tradition of capturing the beauty that surrounds us daily. She is the only artist that has had a one person show at the Four Seasons. In fact she’s had a number of them; in 2004, 2006 and 2009. We are happy to announce that Becky has one coming up on August 4, 2012. Each show has about 60 paintings and they go quickly, so put her show on your calendar now.
Becky was drawn to art at a very early age. She remembers being the student who drew all the bunnies above the blackboard to decorate for Easter, but she didn’t study art in college or in graduate school. She studied English and German. Why German? She didn’t have family in or from Germany, but she knew that Munich was a vibrant and thriving art center on a par with Paris and she knew she wanted to study there. And study there she did for a year at the University of Munich studying life drawing. She became fluent in German and returned to Atlanta where she took a job teaching German at Georgia Tech. But still her love was painting and soon she began getting commissions for portraits. To this day, she considers portraits bread and butter.
But Becky does far more than portraits; her talents include fabulous landscapes and still lifes. She works in several media: watercolor, oils and pastels. Becky maintains a studio at her home in Denver, but when she’s at Hualalai or traveling she works on location. Indeed, she travels all over the world, creating wherever she goes, and she and Bob travel a lot. They’ve returned to Munich over 40 times, and on a trip to Africa she had special photographic permission to visit villages in Zambia, Botswana and Zimbabwe. However her subjects preferred watching her paint, rather than having their photos taken, and she was pleased to accommodate because her art is a joy for her to share.
Becky’s work is available at the gallery at the Hilton Hotel on the Big Island and many of us pick up her stationary and cards at the Trading Company right here on campus.
We’ve shared a little about Becky as an artist, but we have to let you know that Becky is very active in the Hualalai Community. She has been on the Ohana Foundation Board and she is a stalwart behind the Book Club. She and Bob always reach out to new members and are always ready to share not only the beauty of Hualalai but the beautiful spirit of it, too.
