The Hualalai Community Association had its annual meeting on January 21st at Ke ‘Olu. The board and members who attended discussed the following items:
The 2013 budget was reviewed, as was the projection for 2014. The report included the fact that the Association will be purchasing a fire truck (approximately 75K) with the funds that were originally scheduled to activate the internal gates to the various neighborhoods. About five years ago the membership decided they did not want to have internal gates. Also the county removed our old fire truck because they said that our volunteer fire department (trained staff) would have to fight fires off of Hualalai Property. The Board decided to use the funds to purchase a used fire truck and our volunteer fire department has been changed to a brigade; thus they are not compelled to leave their posts here at Hualalai to fight a fire elsewhere along the coast.
There was discussion regarding the need for additional tennis courts. Many members agreed to pursue again, with the aid of Management, the possibility of getting an ambulance or other forms of emergency care. However it is important to know that the Security Team on property is trained as first responders and that in case of emergency all residents should call Security FIRST at (808) 325-8325 and then dial 911.
It was announced that by mid 2014 all blowers and mowers by outside contractors and general landscape should be muffled to lower their decibels. However golf course machinery cannot be muffled because of the size of the machinery and the amount of ground they have to cover.
A report was given about the Coqui Frog problem. The board has an outside service, which comes in every Wednesday evening to capture coqui frogs. They have been successful, but these pests continue to be an ongoing problem here as well as on the rest of the island. The board is looking into a more preventive program to stop the frogs coming in on all new landscape material. If members hear coqui frogs—even one—they should call the Coqui Hotline at 325-8544 and leave a message as to the area in which the coquis were heard.
It was also announced that starting some time next month (February) trash pick-up will be reduced to two days a week (probably on Tuesday and Friday). We will be notified when it will begin. Hana Hou Recycling is available for an extra day of picking up recycled items. For more information go to www.hanahourecycling.com or email them at HanaHouRecycling@gmail.com
Patrick commented that for now Kona Village is still in receivership and that the lender has been out to visit the site and talks continue between the lender, insurance companies and Kamehameha Trust (the leaseholder). Water has been turned bacxk on for many of the trees.
The eight board members were reelected and Karyn Azzopardi was appointed as the final board member.
