Hawaiian to English: Hualalai’s Street Names

Ever wonder what the translation of the street names in Hualalai would be? Becky Holman did so she asked Uncle Earl. Here’s the result of their collaboration:

ʻAhinahina        The Hawaiian name for the Silversword plant.

Ānea                    Gentle, as a breeze

Hāliʻipua           Covered with flowers

Hainoa              Summit of Hualālai Mountain

Hōkūloa            Morning Star

Kahikole           To have lost the red glow of dawn, sunrise.

Kaimupūlehu    The cooking (imu) or oven

Kaʻūpulehū       Ahupuaʻa (the resort’s land division) roasted breadfruit

Kumukehu        The source of the sea mist.

Kaului                Bread Fruit

Ke Alaula          The rosy glow of sunset.

Kūikawā            Special

Lau eki              Sugar cane tassel or shell ginger about to bloom

Lilopa                Fragrant Seaweed

Pakuʻi               Heavily scented

Piʻiuka               Ascend to the uplands

Puka Pa            Gateway

Wai ulu            Growing Waters
