NELHA OUTING AND FARM TO TABLE DINING

On November 15th the staff of Ulu took a group of 30 to explore the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority (NELHA) located makai side just south of the aiport.  We all drive past it every time we go into town.

It started with an orientation about the origin of NELHA, why it is located here and how it operates today.  Then we visited the Keahole Point Hatcheries and learned about cutting edge science of fish farming here and abroad.  That was followed by a tour of the Kona Cold Lobsters.LTD, a business that has been with thus for over 40 years, provides research as well as selling wonderful lobsters and crabs.

Our final visit was to the abalone farm where Chef Nick and Chef James Babian and their staff prepared an elegant and delightful lunch using the ingredients directly harvested from NELHA.   Many followed up with a farm to table dinner at Ulu that evening, still sampling the bounty from the local seas and local fish farms.
