Hualalai Book Club Info

The Hualalai Book Club meets on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 10:30 a.m.. Many of the participants stay on for lunch (Dutch treat) following the meeting. Meetings are currently being held at the Canoe Club, but have also been held at Ke’olu in the past. The Weekly Club Update e-mailed by John Freitas will have a reminder of the time, place and book chosen. Becky Holman is the leader of the group when she’s at Hualalai. Eleo Amen and Debby Webster usually take over the duties when Becky isn’t here.

The books that have been read have almost all had some connection to Hawaii or the Pacific Rim. Recent choices have included: Honor Killing by David Stannard, Song of the Exile by Kiana Davenport, Honolulu by Alan Brennert, Behold the Many by Lois-Ann Yamanaka, House Without A Key by Earl Biggers, Six Months in the Sandwich Islands by Isabella Bird and Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh. April’s selection is Gift of Rain by Tan Eng. Anyone may suggest a book for the group to read, but that person must already have read the book.

Everyone is welcome to participate in the book club. There’s no requirement that you finish the book before the meeting and there’s no quiz at the end. It’s all about enjoying books that you might not otherwise have read and exchanging ideas with others who have read the same book. Different people are at each meeting, since most participants are only part-time residents at Hualalai. Participants often share information about books that they’ve recently read and enjoyed, so it’s a great resource for avid readers.

Feel free to e-mail Becky Holman (beckyandbob310@aol.com) or Debby Webster (debby.webster@gmail.com) if you’d like further information.
