January 8 Talk by Dr. Hart Was For The Birds!

Sally Reeve shared this:

On January 8, Dr. Patrick Hart gave members a look at the audial behavioral and community ecology and conservation of Hawaiian forests and birds.  Much of his research was conducted at the Hakalau Wildlife Refuge on the eastern slopes of Mauna Kea. He is the founder of the Hart Lab at UH Hilo. He and his students have studied: Specific dialects within a bird species between kipukas (small areas with trees within a lava field), the genetic versus community learned bird songs, and the difference in the timing and frequency of bird songs.

Hoping the resort can organize a trip to the Hakalau Wildlife Refuge. Until then if you want to visit the refuge, you need to go in with a guide.https://jackjeffreyphoto.com/tours/ , https://hawaii-forest.com/, https://www.fws.gov/refuge/hakalau-forest/visit-us
