Egrets waiting for mowers to send them yummy morsels are like a Roadrunner cartoon. Thank you to Becky Holman for catching this hilarious image.
HUALALAI BOOK CLUB: Friday, April 18 | Ke’olu Great Room | 10:00 a.m. Eleo’s Talk Story – “The Oceans and the Stars,” by Mark Helprin Mark Helprin, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Winter’s Tale and A Soldier of the Great War, presents a beautifully written novel about the majesty of the sea; a life dedicated to duty, honor, and country; and the gift of falling in love. Cheryl Markham will lead the conversation. Come, whether or not you’ve read the book, bring other book titles to recommend, and stay for lunch.
It’s that magical time of year when the sun is coming up earlier and setting later. And the Francolins are taking their babies for walks around the neighborhood. As soon as I saw the brood traipsing across my lanai, I grabbed my phone for a shot. But just opening the door was enough noise to send them fleeing for shelter. I am still in pursuit of a great shot: I try to sneak up stealthily but to no avail. Yesterday I was still in my pajamas when they came by and I jumped up to follow them…which was to the neighbors’s front lawn. The renter, seeing this woman in her pjs stalking the bushes, slid open his lanai door. Before he could ask, I said (as if this would explain my attire and hair rollers), “It’s the Francolins. They have babies.” He looked at me as if I were crazy and quickly shut his door.
Check out the video below to hear the Francolins warning of danger. They keep guards on alert. Aloha, my Hualalai Club Ohana, I’m starting with an apology for the almost non-existent blog this winter that is rooted in your editor’s reaction to the excessive vog. I and many others suffer from all the symptoms listed–it’s the fatigue and dizziness that bother me the most as well as the brain vog. Even sitting at the computer seems like a challenge and I end up napping several times a day! For me and others, we know that if we can’t see Maui, we should not go outside. (I don’t want to seem like an irrational complainer, but I did ask Lloyd Gillespie to turn off Kilauea. Just kidding. Not about the part of asking Lloyd to turn it off, but he knew I was kidding.) I get daily updates from the USGS Daily Elevated Volcano Activity Summary. Episode 15 had lava shooting 1000 feet into the air.
Meanwhile! Good Stuff is happening. The 4th Annual Hualalai Community Regatta was held on Saturday, May 29. It was a beautiful day on the water, conditions were tough but the paddlers persevered and finished the arduous 15-mile course along our scenic coastline.
